4K Recording for Professional Video Production

The Sony PXW-Z90V is built to produce high-quality footage for modern professional workflows. It records 4K QFHD at 3840 × 2160, giving creators detailed footage suitable for commercial productions, events, documentaries and digital media. Sony specifies XAVC QFHD recording at up to 100 Mbps, while XAVC HD provides professional Full HD recording options.

The camera’s recording flexibility also makes it useful for productions that need different delivery formats. Users can select suitable recording modes depending on their editing workflow, storage requirements and final distribution platform.

1.0-Type Exmor RS CMOS Sensor

At the heart of the PXW-Z90V is a 1.0-type back-illuminated Exmor RS CMOS sensor. This larger sensor format compared with many conventional handheld camcorders helps provide detailed images and gives videographers greater creative control over their footage.

The sensor works together with Sony’s image-processing technology to produce professional-looking video across a wide variety of shooting environments. It is well suited to controlled productions as well as fast-moving event and documentary work.

Fast Hybrid Autofocus

Reliable focusing is essential when recording moving subjects. The PXW-Z90V features Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system, designed to provide quick and accurate focusing while maintaining creative control over the image.

This makes the camcorder particularly useful for weddings, interviews, conferences, live events, sports coverage and other situations where subjects may move unpredictably.

12x Optical Zoom for Flexible Framing

The built-in lens provides a 12x optical zoom, with a focal length of 9.3–111.6mm, equivalent to approximately 29–348mm on a 35mm lens in 16:9.

This versatile range allows you to move from wider establishing shots to close-up framing without changing lenses. It is especially convenient for event videographers and journalists who need to react quickly without interrupting a shoot.

4K HDR, HLG and S-Log3

The Sony PXW-Z90V supports Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) for HDR workflows and S-Log3 for productions requiring greater flexibility during colour grading. Sony describes the HLG workflow as a practical way to shoot, edit and view HDR content without requiring an extensive colour-grading process.

For professional creators, these options make the PXW-Z90V suitable for productions where image quality and post-production flexibility are important.

Slow Motion for Creative Video

The PXW-Z90V also offers high-frame-rate shooting for slow-motion effects. Depending on the selected recording mode and regional frequency, the camera supports high frame rates that can be used to turn fast-moving action into smooth, dramatic slow-motion sequences.

This can be valuable for sports, weddings, music videos, promotional content, documentaries and creative productions.

Professional Audio and Connectivity

High-quality video requires dependable sound. The PXW-Z90V is designed for professional production and supports professional audio workflows, making it suitable for interviews, presentations, events and broadcast-style applications.

The camera also provides wireless networking capabilities. The PXW-Z90V supports both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, enabling wireless production features such as streaming and FTP file transfer when configured with compatible services and accessories.

Compact Design for Mobile Production

Despite its professional feature set, the Sony PXW-Z90V remains relatively compact and portable. Sony lists the camera body at approximately 1,020g with lens hood and eyecup, making it practical for operators who need to work for extended periods or move between different shooting locations.

Its compact form factor is particularly useful for event videography, news gathering, corporate production and documentary work where mobility matters.
