SONY HXR-NX800 VIDEO CAMERA – Professional 4K HDR NXCAM Camcorder

The Sony HXR-NX800 Video Camera (SONHXRNX800) is a professional handheld NXCAM camcorder designed for broadcasters, event videographers, corporate production teams, educators, content creators, churches, and live-streaming professionals who need outstanding image quality, reliable autofocus, powerful zoom, and flexible recording options in a compact professional camera.

Featuring a 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS stacked sensor, BIONZ XR image processing, advanced AI-powered subject recognition, and a versatile 20x optical zoom G Lens, the Sony HXR-NX800 delivers detailed and professional-looking video in a wide range of shooting environments. Sony also equips the camera with 4K high-frame-rate capabilities, HDR support, multiple recording formats, professional colour options, and integrated network connectivity for modern production workflows.

Whether you are recording conferences, weddings, interviews, sports, educational programmes, church services, documentaries, corporate events, or live productions, the Sony HXR-NX800 4K video camera provides the flexibility and control required for demanding professional video work.

1.0-Type Exmor RS CMOS Sensor for Detailed 4K Video

At the heart of the HXR-NX800 is a 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS stacked sensor designed to provide high sensitivity, reduced noise, fast readout, and detailed image reproduction. Combined with Sony’s BIONZ XR image processor, the camera can produce high-quality footage with rich textures and smooth tonal transitions.

The sensor supports recording up to UHD 4K at 60p, while its fast readout also enables high-frame-rate recording for slow-motion applications. The camera can capture 4K at up to 120fps and Full HD at up to 240fps, with approximately a 23% crop at 4K 120fps.

4K HDR with HLG

The HXR-NX800 supports HDR workflows using Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), making it suitable for productions where high dynamic range and natural-looking highlights and shadows are important. HLG can be particularly useful for modern broadcast, event, corporate, and online video production.

20x Optical Zoom G Lens

The integrated 20x optical zoom G Lens gives the HXR-NX800 exceptional versatility without requiring users to change lenses. Its 35mm full-frame equivalent focal-length range of approximately 24–480mm allows you to move from wide-angle scenes to distant subjects with ease.

The camera also provides 30x Clear Image Zoom when recording in 4K, extending your reach while maintaining impressive image detail. This makes the camera especially useful for sports, stage productions, conferences, weddings, interviews, and events where the operator may need to capture subjects from a distance.

AI-Powered Autofocus and Auto-Framing

One of the major advantages of the Sony HXR-NX800 is its intelligent autofocus system. Sony’s dedicated AI Processing Unit works with the BIONZ XR processor to recognise human subjects and support accurate tracking.

The Fast Hybrid AF system helps maintain focus as subjects move, reducing the need for constant manual focus adjustments. This is particularly valuable when filming presenters, speakers, performers, athletes, interviews, and fast-moving events.

Intelligent Auto-Framing

The camera’s Auto Framing capability can automatically recognise a person and adjust the framing to help keep the subject appropriately positioned. This is useful for solo operators and situations where the camera needs to maintain a professional composition without continuous manual intervention.

4K 120fps and Full HD 240fps Slow Motion

For sports, creative productions, action sequences, and dramatic event footage, the HXR-NX800 provides impressive high-frame-rate capabilities.

It can record 4K high-frame-rate footage at up to 120fps and Full HD footage at up to 240fps. This allows videographers to slow down fast-moving subjects and create smooth, detailed slow-motion sequences. Sony specifies that 4K 120fps operation involves approximately a 23% crop, while audio is not recorded during Slow & Quick Motion operation.

Professional Recording Formats

The Sony HXR-NX800 supports a range of recording formats designed for different production and post-production requirements. These include XAVC S, XAVC S-I and XAVC HS, providing flexibility for professional workflows.

XAVC S-I is particularly suited to editing workflows because Intra-frame compression records each frame independently, which can reduce the processing burden during editing compared with Long GOP formats. Sony’s professional recording ecosystem also supports high-quality 10-bit recording options depending on the selected format and frame rate.

Professional Colour Options

The HXR-NX800 provides multiple picture and colour options for different production styles. Users can select from professional looks including S-Cinetone, ITU709, 709tone and HLG options.

S-Cinetone can provide an attractive cinematic-style appearance, while the 709 and HLG options provide flexibility for broadcast and HDR-oriented workflows. The camera can also be colour-matched with other compatible Sony professional and Cinema Line cameras, helping production teams maintain a consistent visual appearance across multiple cameras.

Built for Live Streaming and Network Production

The Sony HXR-NX800 is designed not only for recording but also for modern live production. It features integrated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, supporting network-based workflows and live streaming applications. Sony notes that 5 GHz communication may be restricted in certain countries or regions.

The camera also includes HDMI output and network capabilities suitable for live events, corporate streaming, education, broadcasting, and other applications where content needs to be delivered quickly.

Dual Memory Card Slots

For professional recording reliability, the HXR-NX800 features two memory card slots supporting CFexpress Type A and SD card media, giving users flexible storage options for different recording modes.

Fast CFexpress Type A media can be particularly beneficial when recording demanding high-quality video formats and high-frame-rate footage. Users should always select memory cards that meet Sony’s requirements for the specific recording format and frame rate being used.

Professional 4-Channel Audio

High-quality video needs equally dependable audio. The HXR-NX800 supports 4-channel audio recording, providing greater flexibility for professional productions where multiple microphones or audio sources are required.

This makes the camera well suited to interviews, conferences, weddings, corporate productions, broadcasts, stage events, education, and other situations where capturing clean and well-managed audio is essential.

Electronic Variable ND Filter

The camera includes an Electronic Variable ND Filter, allowing operators to control exposure smoothly while maintaining creative control over shutter speed and aperture. Sony states that the electronic variable ND system can be adjusted from 1/4 to 1/128 density, with an Auto ND option available to help maintain appropriate exposure when lighting conditions change.

This is particularly useful when moving between indoor and outdoor environments or when shooting under changing lighting conditions.

Designed for Professional and Mobile Production

Despite its professional feature set, the Sony HXR-NX800 is designed as a portable handheld camcorder. Its integrated lens, professional controls, viewfinder, LCD monitor, stabilisation features, and network connectivity make it suitable for both single-operator productions and larger production teams.

Built-in image stabilisation can help reduce camera shake, while Active Mode combines optical and electronic stabilisation for smoother handheld footage. Active Mode is subject to limitations at frame rates of 120fps or higher.
